i know some of my lj friends are financially challenged, so i figured i'd pass this on. fred hutchinson is doing a cancer research study where they feed you all your meals for two months to study how it affects your metabolism. specifically, they're feeding a diet that's high in vegetables and fairly healthy overall. at the end of it they pay you $500. i applied.

i am stealing and reposting from [info]arielmeadow - free screenings of "it's all gone pete tong", a film about a club dj losing his hearing. they're happening in various places around the country (atlanta, boston, chicago, detroit, san diego, dc, portland among others). the imdb reviews indicate that people who aren't into dj'ing/dj culture stil seemed to enjoy it.

does anyone have a plug-in hot water dispenser i could borrow for class? i have to give a presentation about kava kava. the most popular presentation gets extra credit points. i decided that people would find it more interesting if i could actually give them some kava... but i need some way to heat the water to a temperature warm enough for tea.

i only need it for tuesday morning, so i'd come and pick it up from you monday night and could give it back to you tuesday night. the larger size it could be, the better..

getting breakfast at madison market this morning, i noticed this story about an employee next to the coffee/juice bar. that's seriously one of the most fucked up things i've read in a long time. i realize that his decision to give the real change guy a beer may not have been the best idea, but still.

(on an unrelated and less depressing note, i also noticed that they now have a delivery service for people who don't live nearby)

brainwash
i'm not a huge psytrance fan, but the one group i do like is x-dream. their music is interesting and diverse and techy and defies a lot of the anti-trance stereotypes. they're playing here saturday night. i may just have to stop by after the eluvium/mono show.

(updated with a link to x-dream's discography for clarification ;) x dream = east coast dj, x-dream = group of producers from germany).

so i want to go to dorkbot tomorrow to see the cute m&m sorting robot (among other things).. and at the bottom i noticed this:

performance: Josh Herrala is the artist and DJ behind Deluxe Curl Records (www.deluxecurl.com), a minimal techno/micro-house label based in Seattle. Coming up in the Detroit area, he began DJing in the early 1990s during the 'Third Wave' of the Techno revolution.

do i know this guy? why does that sound familiar? what's up with his record label? the site is down.

scarier than halloween

even though i was sick and needed sleep, i still felt disturbed that i wasn't doing anything halloween-y. i have a great fear of becoming 'old'. i associate the following things with being old: not continuously learning, not changing (appearance, location, what i eat, etc.), not travelling, becoming overly cynical, becoming apathetic/stagnant, not having real friendships, not being social regularly, not going out on holidays that i like. not all older people are 'old'. quite a few people my age or younger are 'old' in my mind.

i liked henry & june. the imdb critics say that it's one nonstop softcore pornfest, but i disagreed. maria de medeiros-as-anais came off as actually caring about her lovers beyond just experimentation.

the past few nights have been filled with terrible nightmares. in one, earth attacked 37 other planets in a takeover attempt. our destruction was imminent. i worry that this is a prophetic dream about bush getting re-elected.

tomorrow night at chop suey (via the stranger):
Election Night Party (DRINKING & DEMOCRACY) Tonight's the night we learn the fate of the free world. I don't know about you, but I need a drink--and I don't want to drink alone. So The Stranger's Department of Homeland Security is hosting a free party at Chop Suey where we will eat, drink, and pound the shit out of a George W. Bush piƱata while watching the election results on big-screen TVs. Returns should start coming in from those all-important East Coast swing states around 5:30 p.m., so doors open early. Join us to either (a) drown your sorrows or (b) celebrate our victories. Monorail recall chumps are NOT invited. (Chop Suey, 1325 E Madison St, 324-6628, 5 pm, 21+, free.) DAN SAVAGE
