it's true that i've been struggling trying to figure out how i might be able to pay for demf, mutek, coachella, burningman, etc. this year... but that doesn't mean that i wanted somebody else to make the decision for me :( sad.

i enjoyed arrange last night quite a bit. when i was young i played the violin. my brother played cello. we quit for similar reasons; we each had a band instructor who we loathed. i wish i'd dragged my brother along to the performance last night... i think he would've really enjoyed seeing strings combined with djs, synths, etc.
watching todd simon conduct was my favorite part. i didn't know him by name, but he's part of breakestra and has also worked with madlib, macy gray, sharon jones, j boogie and a bunch of other people. all of the conducters i've seen have been fairly sedate... he nearly bounced off the stand, arms flying everywhere, and looked like he could barely restrain himself from dancing. looks like breakestra's playing at the crocodile dec. 20.
after arrange, we headed to element. i'd successfully avoided it since it opened, but the promise of hearing someone from UR in seattle overcame my fears. element's dancefloor reminded me of a rollerskating rink. the floor consisted of disco-era light-up squares. metal bars ran all the way around it, and people hung over the bars and watched the dancers. upstairs was more people hanging over an opening and observing those moving below. there's already a phenomenon where people stand around and don't dance, and i see no reason to exacerbate it by encouraging them to be spectators.
i did like the crowd, though. it was a mix of red bull students who were quite visibly enthusiastic, people who had attended arrange but were not the "regular techno crowd", other producers/djs, and the usual seattle suspects. but my head ached terribly and i acquiesced to its pain to go lay in bed and think about what i was missing.

last year i hosted a naked lady party and it was really fun, so i've decided november is the time for another.
for those who aren't familiar, the concept is this: a group of women bring clothes/shoes which they don't wear and swap them. (not junk, but things which are still cool/stylish but no longer fit you). i've decided to take it one step farther and include accessories, jewelry, bath/body products & makeup in the swap.
i haven't picked a date yet, but evite now has a feature where people can vote on the date... so if you're interested in being added, reply to this post and i'll email you the details :)
for the first weekend in a long time, i plan to stay in town and relax. recently i finished the audiobooks of naked (funny) and a long way down (recommended!). this weekend i hope to finish reading snow crash. it was sitting by the free cascadia stage, so i picked it up and started reading. i ended up buying it online upon my return. i also want to finish listening to the curious incident of the dog in the night-time and among the missing. listening to among the missing is sometimes painful! i tend to prefer the melancholy, but these stories are depressing enough that it's sometimes too much. audible is having another referral contest, so if any of you have a deep desire for a free trial audiobook membership, let me know ;)
i might also go to the capitol hill block party. condor's band, now renamed chuck yay-grrr!, plays on saturday @ 12:45 @ the badjuju. the decibel electronic stage on saturday and sunday also has some good shit. and sunday, for the first week in a long time, i will be very happy to return to flammable.

does anyone have a tent i could borrow for phoenix fest? i'm only going for saturday night.
i've been using my parents' tent for the last 12 or so years, and it's quite thrashed at this point.
i would find a way to repay you (food? gifts? something else?)

so on saturday i think i may head down for the dubtribe show. there's also a free bbq party the next day which looks interesting.
the party i was scheduled to dj at did not get busted. yet due to various unfortunate circumstances, i missed both the times i was scheduled to play. i think the zodiac stage was packed up earlier that day. i thought i might be able to make amends on the psytrance stage by playing sunday, but the owner of the turntables packed 'em up and left only cdjs behind. :( i only play vinyl.
ah well, i still had a good time... good company and the venue was quite lovely :) i was fond of jesiah's shirtless + tie + sarong look.
badly sunburned though. ow ow ow.

not a bad lineup though.. at least, there are people i want to see (egg, john tejada, aril brikha, pheek, legowelt, model 500 live, slum village, sten, jan jelinek). there's a 'harder' area too - bryan zenta, marco corolla, ben sims, christian smith, adam beyer. some other people - green velvet & jeff milligan.
people i'll be missing:
sweet, kiki guested me for the new house weekly at the war room. i've been wanting to check it out anyway 'cause i liked the space in its previous incarnation. any of ya'll going?
i enjoyed eddie's set more than x dream's. it was actually only 1/2 of x dream.. the other half was sick or something. and he didn't start until 4am.
i had a good time though. the new layout of the lish house was weird..
there's something very comforting about looking around and seeing people that i danced with 11 years ago still dancing next to me. it felt like going home.

the last time i went to portland and ran into friends they said "HEY! you should really let us know when you're coming so we can actually hang out!" so this is a warning to my neighbors to the south.. i'll be all up in your area beginning thursday of next week. thursday i'll be at ground kontrol and then techno sol. we are probably sticking around saturday for michael mayer and
r9. i also want to go to a fancypants restaurant on friday because my birthday is the next thursday and i have decided to celebrate it early. any recommendations for such a place would be appreciated ;)
