so i'm thinking that on the upcoming trip to sf, i might like to drive down to big sur. i've never driven south of santa cruz. my mom went to big sur when she was my age and showed me pictures... it was gorgeous. she stayed at the esalen institute - it's definitely up my alley, but way unaffordable.
i started looking at bed & breakfasts and other places to stay. most of them are really expensive. i found the compassion flower inn's description very funny. guests can stay in the "hemp room" which features "relaxing hemp leaf decor" and if they have a "doctor's recommendation for medical cannabis", they are invited to enjoy that on the back porch.
anyway, if you guys have recommendations for unique places to stay and/or things not to miss, let me know ;)
it's been 7 years since the first time i set foot in san francisco. that was one of the darkest times of my life, but the city enthralled me. i'm no less enamored now.
part of it admittedly is aesthetic. the elderly lady on the plane wore turquoise jewelery, an argyle sweater, a tweed skirt with a ribbon around the bottom, socks that went partway up her calf, little slippers, and a canvas bag with red trim and a red handle. a chinese man in his 50s on muni wore brown sauconys with a little pink stripe, a small hat which rode jauntily to the side, and a blazer with a shiny pin. 'sweetheart' read the back of another man's trainer-style jacket. a metallic pink-silver bag that looked like it was paint but it was fabric. a scarf made out of handmade felt in the shapes of leaves and vines and when it was wrapped around she resembled a tree. i only wish i had my camera. i'd do the san francisco version of fruits but with older people. i'm sure a billion people have already done it. i'm ready to rehash the past, though.
the architecture. houses ought to be pink and purple and orange and yellow. they should contain stairs which you can sit on and watch people walk by and windows which curve out and strange carved things. when you're in them, you should know that you are surrounded by the ghosts of other people who also once stared at that ceiling and cried. it comforts me. it's harder for people to be intolerant and isolated when the presence of so many different ways of living is in their faces nonstop. but it's still the left coast. six people talked to me in public spaces in a hour's time. and they weren't guys trying to get in my pants. :P
and my sf livejournal friends kick ass. that'll have to be post #2, though, because june is here and i must go inside ;)

i'm terribly excited for my trip to san francisco for love parade, even though i haven't actually confirmed out where the hell i'm going to be staying in sf or what i'll be doing. i do want to go to resfest. 8 days left to figure all this out before i leave. if any of you want to be harassed by me, now's the time to email me numerical access codes ;)
